While 9 out of 10 Americans have Bisphenol A in their bodies, the Food and Drug Administration claims the levels of exposure to chemicals are insignificant to endanger their health, even for babies and children.
Commonly known as BPA, bisphenol-A is a hormone-disrupting chemical used in a wide variety of consumer goods such as food and beverage packaging applications, plastic hard to do. But it has also been found in house dust, drinking water or dental sealants. It is so common that it is almost impossible to avoid.

According to the results of a health survey, based on 1500 data on Americans, individuals exposed to greater amounts of Bisphenol A no less than 40% higher rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and liver damage. This category was also more likely to be indigent and overweight, the researchers said.

However, further studies should be conducted to determine if BPA is actually associated with health problems or is it just a coincidence. The FDA agrees with the idea of doing additional research. "We recognize the need to resolve issues that have arisen," said Laura Tarantino, director of the FDA Office of Food Additive Safety, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Despite the fact that previous studies with rats and mice found a link between the chemical and diabetes, and liver abnormalities, several limitations must be taken into consideration. "Concentrations urinary say the exposure of the last 24 hours, but heart disease and diabetes do not occur overnight," said Steven G. Hentges, executive director of the Polycarbonate / BPA Global Group of the American Chemistry Council. "Bisphenol A should be measured over the period of time when heart disease or diabetes is actually occurring, so that a major limitation of the study," concluded Hentges.

What is hemoglobin?

Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs.

Hemoglobin is made up of four protein molecules (globulin chains) that are connected together. The normal adult hemoglobin (Hbg) molecule contains 2 alpha-globulin chains and 2 beta-globulin chains. In fetuses and infants, there are only a few beta chains and the hemoglobin molecule is made up of 2 alpha chains and 2 gamma chains. As the infant grows, the gamma chains are gradually replaced by beta chains.

Each globulin chain contains an important central structure called the heme molecule. Embedded within the heme molecule is iron that transports the oxygen and carbon dioxide in our blood. The iron contained in hemoglobin is also responsible for the red color of blood.

Hemoglobin also plays an important role in maintaining the shape of the red blood cells. Abnormal hemoglobin structure can, therefore, disrupt the shape of red blood cells and impede its function and its flow through blood vessels.

Sept. 23, 2010 -- The FDA will not ban Avandia -- but stringent restrictions will make it far harder for doctors to prescribe the safety-troubled diabetes drug.

The European Medicines Agency took harsher action. European sales of Avandia-containing drugs will be suspended over the next few months, although the agency did not formally withdraw approval.

The 600,000 U.S. patients currently taking Avandia can continue to take the drug only if their doctors officially attest that their patients understand the risks, that the drug is helping them, and that no other diabetes drug can keep their blood sugar under control.

I just returned from an event at the New York Times building called Pneumonia's Last Syrah - a social event to raise awareness of the problem of pneumonia which featured food, wine, and a beautiful photo exhibit. It was a lovely evening, so I must thank Mala Persaud from +gmmb for inviting me. We academics don't get out nearly enough.
While at this meeting, I met a woman who formerly worked for a large global health organization and who now works in stand up comedy. I asked her if she had ever considered developing a whole stand up comedy routine about global health. She asked, is there really such thing as a good global health joke? Could we really laugh at disease and disability? Is global health funny?

It turns out, the "pairing" of Syrah and Pneumonia actually grew out of a global health joke once cracked by Eric Asimov, the New York Times wine critic, who once asked:

What's the difference between a case of Syrah and a case of pneumonia? You can get rid of the pneumonia.

As a lecturer, I sometimes compare my lectures to a comedy routine. I prepare my talks, test a few lines each year on my students, and then once I find that something works I do it over, and over, and over, again. Sad to say it, but University professors are really just very bad stand up comics.

Britain needs a massive house-building programme to stabilise property prices – which could be promoted by allowing villages to share in developers' profits if they approve plans and by ending the right to a council house on the basis of need, a thinktank says today.

Policy Exchange — which has close links to the Tory leadership — says the radical proposals are needed to contain a housing crisis. Its report, entitled Making Housing Affordable, suggests the government set a target that by 2030 the average price of the cheapest 25% of homes should be only four times the income of a household on the minimum wage. At present it is 12 times. It argues that the only way to achieve this is to embark on a massive home-building programme. The report also notes that the last decade saw 160,000 new homes being built a year – compared with 360,000 each year in the 1960s.

The report claims the problem lies with the country's complex planning laws. At present local authorities decide if proposals get planning permission but this, it says, should be changed so that local people vote on proposed developments.

The coalition government has said it is considering a similar scheme but, according to Policy Exchange, it is setting the bar too high at 90% of votes cast. It says a straightforward majority should be enough. Developers could use cash incentives – such as the windfall gain that they receive when planning permission is granted – to persuade those affected to vote in favour.

"If a village decided to increase in its size from 2,000 to 3,000 households, incorporating a large and high-quality development, this would easily permit a £10,000 payment to every existing household in the village," says the report.

Alex Morton, a former civil servant and author of the report, said that he did not see this as a "bribe or incentive". He said: "The money could just as well be used to build a park."

Another key proposal is that social housing should no longer go to those in greatest need. This criterion has resulted in half of all new social tenants coming from economically inactive working-age households reliant on benefits. Instead the government should allocate it "firstly to those who are severely disabled, but then subsequently to those who wait longest or have the greatest local connections to an area".

This would allow social housing to become a stepping stone for low-paid people towards owning their own homes. All housing association stock would be handed to the government which could then sell off the houses to renters who wanted to buy their property. New homes could be built by issuing bonds which would be repaid out of rent. The new set-up would see 100,000 extra homes a year built and the Treasury make £2.64bn a year from house sales.

However, others doubt whether such a radical move could be made. "The question is what is social housing for," said Sam Lister of the Chartered Institute of Housing. "Is it to raise revenue or is it meant to be where those in greatest need get homes? The tension that you always see with Conservative governments is that one wing of party always says: why are we rewarding the undeserving who do not contribute their bit to society? In the Major administration you saw changes to social housing because there was a perception that if you get yourself pregnant you get a house. It's the same clash again today."

THE ENDING IS NEAR -Forex

1,447 days ago I started to step in the world of Forex. 6th May 2006 is the day I registered my 1st demo account and its a Saturday. Through out my journey in Forex, there are no actual manual, text or books that I can really refer to. Its like an unexplored land with no maps what so ever. There are only guides available online with no one giving specific answer.

Though hard it may be I started to develop my own system and continue to improve on that system. No matter how I try to improve it, there is still something missing. After a long and hard work I finally got the answer. It is an answer that I wasn't willing to accept. So I disappeared for almost 1 year though my part of moving places only took 1 month to settle.

Now I am back trading with the answer in my head thus a new direction in my sight. Turns out it is really easy once you have the right answer. You know the question as well as I do. "WHAT IS FOREX".

I believe my learning period in Forex is almost over. I can now see direction clearly. I know which pair to trade with the highest probability of profit. I know when to exit and I know when to turn off the computer while still holding positions. I have mastered the basic of Forex. The only thing now is discipline and Money Management.

What I am not willing to do is to write in this blog about trading ideas. I may blow out the answer. After almost 4 years, its not something I am willing to give easily. There are no notes, no records, nothing written anywhere on my trading ideas. Its all in my head. My system now is so simple, it consist of only 2 main indicators which I can trade without. Find the answer and its all smooth sailing from there. I just wish I have found it earlier.

For those of you who show interest in my new trading system, thank you for the attention. I have stopped giving out my system due to limited time I have to teach. I dont teach, I dont sell my system, I dont ask for your money and I dont give signals.

How Insulation Works
Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. Reflective insulation works by reducing the amount of energy that travels in the form of radiation. Some forms of reflective insulation also divide a space up into small regions to reduce air movement, or convection, but not to the same extent as batts, blankets, loose-fill, and foam.

Manley McLachlan, President of British Columbia Construction Association (BCAA) feels positive about the future of construction in B.C. and suggests that there will be enough work to go around. “We see a strong future for construction in British Columbia,” says McLachlan, who is encouraging BCCA members to have confidence in the economy. The major projects inventory for the province lists $180 billion in construction projects, indicating a high level of investment planned for BC. These projects will most likely come to the market in the next five to seven years.

For now, the recent downturn in the economy and the federal and provincial infrastructure stimulus packages that emerged, have changed the focus of construction activity from private projects to public. This shift has resulted in increased activity for the BCCA around public procurement, particularly tendering procedures. The BCCA has a long history of developing and advocating for industry standards in the procurement process and with the increase in public construction activity they have quickly found themselves back in the thick of the issues once again. “In the public arena, where taxpayer dollars are being spent, there is no substitute for open, fair and transparent tendering policies and procedures,” notes McLachlan, “and the BCCA will work diligently with Government to ensure that message is heard and adhered to by public agencies.”

Looking to the future, however, McLachlan predicts that the skilled labour shortage will soon return as workers retire from the industry. “We believe that the key issue for most contractors in the years to come will be the loss of existing talent,” says McLachlan.
